Q3 update
We've had, to our surprise, a few successes lately. Other than the semi-success of re-homing Latte, there was Blossom, whom I befriended whilst on evening walks with baby; Barley, another cream-and-white kitten which we found one morning when Gravitas paid a visit to our regular GP for yet another bout of 'flu (although we lost his sibling, Curly who was quite sick by the time we picked him up), and Turnip, Pumkin's friend from mumsie's back lane. Blossom, Barley and Turnip were found new families by the ever helpful vets from Klinik Wawasan who saw to it that they were/will be neutered and vaccinated.
Pumkin, the white and marmalade with pneumonia which mumsie rescued from a litter in her backlane, is currently residing in her backyard. He's been neutered, dewormed and vaccinated and looks to be our first TNR because the vets couldn't find him a new family. Only he's rather tamer than your usual TNR, despite starting out pretty wild. When mumsie opens the backdoor, he runs into the kitchen and rubs up against her legs. Or the legs of anyone who happens to be there. The backalley cats bullied him initially, stealing his food and such but he seems to have found his place for now. Its not ideal, having him live in the mosquito-infested backyard, but I suppose it's a compromise between going sick and hungry in the streets and an uncertain future at an animal shelter.
Gravitas has been feeding a feral whom he calls Ring Tail at a commercial area nearby for nearly two months. She is Barley and Curly's mother. She had two other kittens who have recently disappeared. We had hoped to rescue them but they wouldn't let Gravitas touch them right up to the time they disappeared. Instead, a black and grey tabby sauntered up to him a couple of weeks back. Cottontail is currently residing in our bathroom whilst we try to decide what to do with him.
By the way, the Spice Meow count has risen to eight. Cumin, whom the vets call The Golden Phanter (his face does bear a resemblance to the pink one) was found pan handling at our stairs one day. He was so tame he let Gravitas carry him with one hand back to our place. Only he's not really tame - he's really rambunctious and casualties so far include a kitchen roll (means he got up on the kitchen counter, grrr), our brand new screen door and very nearly some heirloom china on display. He also enjoys tormenting the existing cats. We don't have as much time to rehabilitate cats as we used to so we're wondering whether to banish him to mumsie's backyard.
We're reluctant to resort to that but it is getting very crowded in here; and mumsie seems to think that Pumkin has the best of both world - regular feedings, medical attention and a home as well as the freedom to roam.
