Coriander Once More

Cory's back! Haleluia! Not without a struggle but I suspect that in the end, his stomach save the day/week/year. Last night, as Gravitas drove past the Usual Place on his way home from work Cory poked his head out from under a car parked nearby (as usual). After Gravitas parked his car and walked back to the Usual Place with some food, Cory was ready and waiting for his dinner. He allowed Gravitas to touch him and sensing a golden opportunity, Gravitas phoned to ask me to get the Implements (carrier, leash, catnip) ready.

After he finished his dinner, Cory meowed for seconds. So Gravitas walked to his car to fetch seconds, and Cory tagged along. When I got to the Usual Place with the Implments, Cory was munching his way through his seconds. Slipping a lasso improvised from a leash around his neck (like they do on Animal Planet), he was as good as ours, although it was a little ugly getting him into the cat carrier. He put up a sprited struggle but the lasso held true. Cory howled indignantly in the carrier and following the advice we'd read in last Saturday's newspaper, we left him for a while in the carrier, covered in towel to help calm him down. We threw in his toy turtle liberally doused with catnip for good measure.

His face and paws were dirty, his coat no longer gleamed, he smelt of cockroaches, he paced his quarantine room restlessly and meowed irritably, but we were overjoyed. We had heard plenty of caterwauling the day before and Gravitas thought that he saw (from our balcony) Cory challenging the neighbourhood's pack of dominant stray (or nominally-owned) cats. Obviously he was sent fleeing with a flea in his ear from the food source and choice resting spots had to resort to sleeping in drains and petitioning us for handouts.

We didn't kill the fattened calf on his return but nevertheless, we went out for a celebratory doctor's visit because Gravitas had incurred extra scratches in implementing The Rescue, and the bites inflicted in The Escape last Saturday had caused his arm to swell up. Right now, Cory is snoozing on the bookshelf under the window, and for this brief moment in time, all seems right with the world.
