Cory Dreaming

Cory is fast asleep under the ironing board as I type this. His head is resting on his paws and his jaw is moving. Animals get REM sleep too. Sometimes they also twitch and whimper. What is Cory dreaming about, I wonder? Perhaps he is dreaming of his former family, which either lost or abandoned him. We suspect that Cory is not a feral, that is a cat that has never known human companionship. Feral cats sometimes never learn to trust humans enough to even allow themselves to be touched.
On the contrary, Cory, although he would start at passers-by and run to hide under a nearby car, albeit skittishly allowed us to pet him even before we took him into our home. After having been with us for less than a week, he jumped onto my lap for some sayang as I sat at the PC. Pepa has never done that and Ginger has done it only once (although both will sneak into the bedroom to have a snooze next to me on the bed). All which made us conclude that Cory previously had a human family. Who were they? Did they move away and leave Cory behind? Did he run away? How long ago did this happen? Cory was skinny as anything when we first saw him. His bones jutted out from under his fur. The first time I brushed him after we brought him home, tufts of fur attached to pieces of dried skin or scab came off, along with a colony of dead fleas. His front incisor teeth are missing, save for one each on the top and bottom mandibles when cats are supposed to have a set of six each. Poor baby! I wonder how he lost them?

The vet diagnosed Cory with cat flu. The infection had reached his lungs and he is on antibiotics, mucolyctic and eye drops. He has gotten better, and although his eyes and nose are still runny, he has started to play pounce, bat and chase with his toy turtle. He is also now able to find his food. Where before we had to rattle his bowl with kibbles inside to direct him to it, he now knows immediately when wet food is going to be served. We hope and pray he'll be well soon, and will be able to get along with the other Spice Meows.
